Am I Twisted?

January 5th, 2009 | By dillon-kgmi in Uncategorized | 3 Comments »

This nearly month-long round of cold and snow has a lot of you cursing our meteorologist Jeff Johnson for bringing bad news every morning.

I’ve got to admit, though, that I love it. In fact, my only problem with the weather right now is that it’s getting kind of boring — I’d like another storm, or something to liven up the forecast.

One time, a listener to PM Bellingham (which I co-hosted at the time) named Lee called me (and I quote) ”a twisted little creep” in an email.  Upon the above proclamation of my love for extreme weather, you might be starting to agree with him.

This morning, it sounds like Wednesday and Thursday might get slightly more exciting, with heavy rains, wind and possible flooding, so I’m happy to hear that (I rely on Jeff Johnson for my 5-day forecast, but I for a look 2-3 weeks out, I typically visit The Weather Café by Rufus at http://www.ovs.com/weather_cafe.htm. Rufus usually updates on Mondays and Fridays, unless there’s a big weather event that warrants a mid-week posting).

I do feel for the people and businesses that the weather negatively impacts. But, there’s just something about a good wind storm that I really enjoy. Or maybe a good north county blizzard. Yeah, I guess I am twisted.

When Mother Nature speaks loudly enough to invade our daily routines, I think it’s a good thing. It makes you feel small. I compare it with the overwhelming feeling a breathtaking mountaintop view gives, except all five senses are involved, and you don’t have to travel any farther than your own backyard.

When you can’t drive anywhere because your road is drifted in, or you have to resort to flashlights and candles because a wind gust took out a nearby power line, you’re forced to recognize that we aren’t even close to being as in-control of our lives as we tend to think we are.

And that’s when people start banding together. We start to realize it isn’t one person versus another, but all of us versus the elements. We’re in this together, and there’s nothing we can do about it but help each other out.

Political differences and neighborhood squabbles suddenly seem insignificant. When your neighbor is helping you pull out your stuck car, it doesn’t matter who he voted for in November.

Alright, Lee, so maybe I am a ‘twisted little creep’, loving bad weather the way I do, but I’m OK with the title.

See you out in the next snow storm.
